OEM Volkswagen Brake Drums
Top 4 Ways to Maintain Volkswagen Brake Drums
Interstate 15. Between Miramar Way and Scripps Poway Parkway. Right around the corner from us here in Kearny Mesa. One of the worst stretches of road in San Diego. And one of the worst places to have brake problems.
Picture it. Headed south for Friars Road, toward Mission Valley. At night. The brake pedal's been feeling a little too low lately -- spongy. The brakes start to vibrate. That VW Beetle that was love at first sight on the lot -- it starts to shudder. You hear scraping or scratching; time to pull over.
Could just be a loose parking brake. Something as simple as a brake cable needing adjustment. Maybe just a worn brake shoe. Not worth taking chances. You get a tow to the VW dealer, have the service pros run an inspection on the rear brakes. Grooves, maybe some cracks, a little scoring, a heat spot or two -- turns out it's bad brake drums. "Semper vigilans," as they say here; good thing you caught it early. Not worth risking ignoring on the roads of America's Finest City.
Now, it's time to replace them. The job's straightforward enough. Plus, you can buy the best here; we carry them cheaper than MSRP. But you want to keep them in the best possible shape, for longer. Good thing you came to us for advice; here's how.
1. Say "No" to Rust
You get rust, you'll end up with scratches, and those scratches will become cracks fast. Cracking means problems generating friction -- trouble stopping. That's a freeway accident waiting to happen. Keep the drum clean -- with fine-grit sandpaper, rust-remover, a rotary tool, even a shotblasting or sandblasting machine -- and you should be able to avoid all that.
2. Brake Smart
These tips are straightforward, and often obvious. Avoid hard stops, if you can help it; that'll avoid creating excess heat, and less heat means less brake drum wear. On that count, to slow down, coast when you can do it safely, instead of hitting the brakes right off the bat. And don't "two-foot" the gas and brake pedals, either. It'll just wear the drums out for no good reason.
3. Load Up Smarter
Don't drive with a trunk or cabin that's too heavy if you don't need to. You won't have to brake as hard, and that'll mean less drum wear.
4. Replace Brake Fluid
Over time, brake fluid can start to hold a little water. That water can boil when you brake. And that'll affect how well your brakes work; you'll have to brake more, and harder, and that means -- you guessed it -- more brake drum wear. Bleeding and flushing cuts down on that moisture. Do it every 2 years or so.
